Here at experimenta anyone and everyone is welcome.

We want to be open and accessible for everyone, regardless of whether our visitors are blind, have auditory or visual disabilities, use a wheelchair, or have a cognitive/mental or any other disability.

Barrier-free accessibility to experimenta

General information

  • Admission for accompanying persons: Please book a regular ticket for the accompanying person first. On presentation of a disabled person’s ID card, you will be reimbursed the ticket price for the accompanying person if you have a disability of 50% or more.
  • Our staff members are happy to help. Contact them with any questions you might have.
  • In both experimenta buildings (e1 and e2), there are several public restrooms on every level.
  • experimenta has a “unisex, accessible toilet” with an adult changing table, patient lift, accessible toilet, and sufficient space for a wheelchair to maneuver. It may also be used without an admission ticket during our opening hours. To use these facilities, please approach one of our staff members at the ticket counter.

Limited mobility

  • There are 11 accessible parking spaces for disabled persons in the experimenta parking structure (approx. 150 meters from experimenta). Walkways to experimenta from the parking structure as well as from the surrounding bus and tram stops (Hauptbahnhof, Busbahnhof, Neckarturm stop) are wheelchair accessible and clearly marked.
  • experimenta, including the Science Dome, the exhibitions, and the observatory, is wheelchair accessible as is the restaurant on the ground floor.
  • There are two wheelchair spaces in the Science Dome. There is one wheelchair space in the observatory; however, a total weight of 225 kilograms may not be exceeded. To ensure that your wheelchair fits and can be used in the observatory, please register in advance with our Infoservice: +49 (0) 7131 88795 – 0.
  • A wheelchair can also be borrowed at the ticket counter, if needed. Subject to availability.
  • The group lift may be used for larger power wheelchairs.
  • Most doors open automatically or after pushing the button.
  • You can also borrow an arm extension at the ticket counter. This allows you to operate the interactive stations which are otherwise difficult to reach from a seated position.

Vision impairment

  • There is a tactile guidance system installed on the ground of experimenta’s courtyard. Lifts have tactile controls, and the respective level is announced when the door opens. The emergency staircases and fire escapes have tactile level indicators on the handrail.
  • At the ticket counter, blind and visually impaired visitors may borrow a tactile map of experimenta for the duration of their visit.
  • Service dogs are allowed to accompany visitors to experimenta. No advance notice is required.
  • Individual tactile maps of the sun are available in the observatory.

Hearing impairment

  • Some of the interactive stations at experimenta are equipped with headphones and unfortunately are only suitable to a limited degree for hearing impaired visitors. However, 90% of the interactive stations in the exhibition can also be used by visitors with auditory disabilities.
  • There are several options for personal listening assistance available in the Science Dome. The free “MobileConnect” App delivers sound to your cell phone through our hearing aid WiFi. Connected with your headphones, the induction loop, or our own FM station (for visitors with implants), your listening experience can begin. We also have devices we can lend you that already have the app installed. You can also borrow induction loops, single earphones, or an adapter for your headphones by asking at the Science Dome entrance. Our staff members are happy to help!

Our inclusion team

Inclusion only works when it’s lived. experimenta is committed to help make a difference.

This is why an inclusion team is constantly working on expanding and improving our offerings for people with disabilities and special needs. The team is staffed by people from a wide range of disciplines. They are supported by an inclusion advisory council composed of people with and without disabilities.
